Have you ever found that one perfect accessory that makes your heart sing? When you hold it in your hands, you feel a surge of excitement or get weak in the knees, because you know you’ve found that perfect piece that feels just like an extension of you. When you wear it, you know it’s not just another pretty thing to spice up your outfit, it’s a piece that tells the world about who you are.
Can you relate? If you can, then you KNOW that excitement of wanting to show off your new favorite piece and tell everyone about it! And if not, you probably just haven’t found your piece yet, the one that just feels right (been there, done that). Maybe you’re looking for something elegant, but not cookie-cutter. Something with character that also feels high-end. Something versatile…and shiny doesn’t hurt either! If that’s you my friend, look no further than Linkouture in Somerville, MA!
This spring I had the honor of working with the lovely Bev, the owner of Linkouture and designer of all these jewelry pieces, to bring her jewelry to life in product and lifestyle photography. If you’re a fellow Somervillian you may have seen Linkouture at Somerville Open Studios, or perhaps you’ve heard of the jewelry by way of Bev's book, The Busy Mom’s Guide To Creativity. Everything in this post is from Bev's newest line, and now available to shop online! I’m so excited for this newest stage of her business, it’s very exciting to see her work take off even more (she’s getting a ton of love on Instagram)! For Bev’s photography, what we did first was on-white product photography to show the detail and design of each piece without any distractions. These are important so that any customers can see what the entirety of each piece looks like! I took a variety of shots from several angles, slightly varying light directions, and different depth of field (meaning more or less of the product is in focus vs. blurred). These are just a few examples!
Bev and I also scheduled a date to do some lifestyle photography with the jewelry. This was done in our local area, and we discussed options for what type of environment and scenery meshes best with the style of jewelry, as well as what Linkouture’s customers would most love and identify with. All in all this became an awesome collaboration! We ended up having absolutely perfect timing, and our shoot date was scheduled for a week when tulips were in full bloom (dreamy backdrop, yes pleeease)!
Bev also wanted the jewelry modeled on at least two people. If you spend any time on my blog, you’ll recognize one of our models right away—Diane from Fashion On The 4th Floor! She was PERFECT for this session and agreed to work with us right away. Bev handled the rest of the modeling, and with just a tiny bit of directing she rocked it! Total dream team!
I loved this lifestyle session because it shows the character and elegance of each piece in a totally unique way, and it was also a great way to mix and match pieces and show what the combinations look like together. These photos also show scale (how large or small they are on a person) and what they look like with different styles of clothing. Win-win-win!
This isn't always the case since there are so many details that go into making an aesthetically pleasing image, but this was such a great session that we had over 100 proofs to choose from! Whenever I get to work with fellow entrepreneurs and creatives and see their success, I feel like such a proud mama! When you own your own business AND you’re a solopreneur, sometimes it feels like it takes forever for all the pieces to fall into place and for everything to work together seamlessly for you to achieve your goals. As a photographer and someone who does their fair share of shopping online, I can say that cohesive visual elements and imagery make a huuuge difference in the perception of a product! My biggest concern was knowing what to wear for the lifestyle photo shoot and having the "right" amount of makeup on. (Plus, the weather!) Talking to you ahead of time and at the shoot, I felt like I had put together the right look for our shoot and I'm so happy with the results.
My favorite part was seeing the process of doing the styled shots and having the opportunity to see how they looked on camera. I have done professional photo shoots before, but all of life events, and never for my business, so this was a lot of fun and made me even more excited about branding and creating a professional look for my jewelry.
I chose to spend more on professional photography because the amount of time I would have spent trying to do my own product photography would have greatly exceeded the cost (timewise) of having you do my photographs. Also, your photographs were of a vastly greater quality than mine would have been. I see this as an investment in my business because I rely on high-quality visuals to sell my products.
I would say that Lorna is a pleasure to work with. She takes her work seriously but in a laid-back, approachable manner. All of my questions were addressed quickly, and the turnaround time was quick.
